There is a little project, etckeeper, which can version /etc with git, hg or bzr, and adds versioning of file metadata plus some hooks into apt which will commit the changes automatically when installing new packages.

Ubuntu Hardy has "etckeeper", a package to support just that.
The default VCS there is "Git", but it has bzr support, too.
See <a href="http://daniel.hahler.de/2008/04/23/track_changes_to_etc_configuration_files" rel="nofollow">my blog post about etckeeper</a>.

Hey Vincent,

well actually it's quite manageable - I've been doing it for a couple of months on my desktop box now. It would be neat to take out the overhead and possibility of forgetting though. Maybe I need to find a way to integrate it with sudoedit.

Interesting idea, using version control for /etc/. I'd use Git because I'm familiar with that, but I suppose I don't really have a need to do this. It'd be a lot of overhead to make a new commit each time I edit something - if I even thought of it, because I don't manually edit files that often. I suppose there's a bigger chance that a backup is created automatically like e.g. displayconfig-gtk does.

Nice idea though :)
